What We Do
Friends of Moses Hall, Inc. is dedicated to preserving and protecting the historic Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Cemetery and Hall site in Cabin John, Maryland.
This rare cultural landscape is home to one of the few documented African American burial grounds and the only extant lodge foundation of a benevolent society established in Montgomery County during the Jim Crow era.
Our work focuses on safeguarding the historical, cultural, and educational value of this important site through documentation, collaboration, and community engagement.
Preservation and Documentation
We are committed to advancing a long-term preservation plan for the Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Cemetery and Hall site. Through advocacy and collaboration with descendants, public officials, professional archaeologists and engineers, historians, researchers, and preservation specialists, we have:
Advocated for the completion of archaeological surveys, including ground-penetrating radar that identified over 400 potential burials.
Completed preliminary site mapping and assessment to understand topography, burial locations, and environmental conditions.
Conducted ongoing burial records research to successfully document over 130 burials to date.
Ensured the protection of artifacts and funerary objects discovered at the site.
Supported applications for official designation and recognition, including eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Planning for Restoration and Stewardship
We are developing site restoration plans that include:
Stabilization of burial sites and erosion control.
Construction of an access driveway to safely reach the cemetery.
Interpretive signage and educational displays.
Design and installation of respectful memorial features to honor those buried at the site.
Ongoing grounds maintenance and tree management.
Public Education and Engagement
Public awareness and educational outreach are central to our mission. Friends of Moses Hall has:
Produced a short documentary film—Help Us to Help Each Other, Lord: The Story of Morningstar Tabernacle Number 88 of Cabin John, Maryland.
Hosted community clean-up events, volunteer days, descendant reunions, and cemetery tours.
Participated in panel discussions, preservation conferences, community events, and local history programs.
Supported ongoing genealogical and archival research.
Collaboration and Partnership
We work closely with descendant families, local preservation organizations, public officials, and community members to ensure this site’s story is preserved with care and accuracy. We also advocate for the thoughtful consideration of historic sites in public infrastructure planning.
